Introduction

Being a videographer is a rewarding career as you get to involve in happy moments of many others. However, when it comes to editing your video, (although editing is fun), it becomes a nightmare if you don’t know where to find the right song that fits the moment. I’ve seen many FB posts asking the same question “How to find music for wedding video editing?” from many video editors, like me.

Most folks say, “go for popular songs” or “look for indie, ambient or cinematic songs”, but that’s not the case for some clients. For example, those who love rock songs will definitely be unsatisfied with your choice if you follow that advice. So, how should you find the right music for your wedding video?

Well, in that case, you mainly have two choices.

  • Using New Songs
  • Using Popular Songs

Let’s break down this article using these choices, or else, you’ll get bored.

Quick Note

Being a professional video editor means you ought to respect the rights of musicians. Therefore, we will only discuss paid choices here. Remember, you can always go with Creative Commons, but hey, paid choices give you more creativity, uniqueness and value.

How to Find New Wedding Songs for Wedding Video Editing

Finding the right song for your wedding video can be challenging if you choose this option. But it also gives you more creativity and excitement and make you more satisfied when you find the perfect pitch. To find new wedding songs for your video, you can opt with premium music libraries such as MusicBed, Artlist and PremiumBeat. These music libraries offer royalty free music that can be used in your projects for a fee. You can own the music to use on your own project on pay-per-project basis or subscriptions basis.

What’s interesting in these music libraries is that they have search functionalities that can break down the selection of music according to different options. If you know the mood of your occasion, you may choose the mood from the menu. For instance, you can use love songs in wedding videos and uplifting and happy songs for birthday parties. They also have options for the genre, artist, attributes and instrument type. In the advanced settings, you can even explore more options to categorize music.

As you can see, music libraries like MusicBed can offer you thousands of choices suitable for your wedding video project. But what if your couple is begging for a popular song like “Perfect by Ed Sheeran” or “Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley”, just because they have memories of those songs? That’s where you should seek help from the next section, which is,

How to Find Top Wedding Songs (Popular Songs) for Wedding Video Editing

Some clients expect personalization from the video editor and ask for specific songs to include in their video. I once met a couple that wanted me to include the “Yakety Sax by Boots Randolph” because they first met at a fun run event where it played this song, while dressed in silly costumes. They wanted to include this memory in their wedding video and organized a “fun run” event during their ceremony. Who knows, you may also find such clients with odd requests.

In such cases, you will have to look for the specific song in different music libraries. Here, you may have different options. The following are mine.

Lickd

An unusual name for a music library, since it has nothing to do with the “tongue”. This service offers a wide range of Top 40 tracks and claims to have over 1 million tracks in the network for licencing. Fortunately, Lickd offer monetization option for Youtubers and influencers, with a pricing model based on the average YouTube views of your channel. For example, if you receive less than 50k views, you will have to pay only $22.9 per song for licencing. And of course you can use these songs in your wedding videos.

Fyrfly

Fyrfly is another music library that has top 40 songs, but it offers a subscription model rather than a pay-per-song model. Last time I checked the subscription for an individual videographer costs $100 per year. Well, that’s much cheaper because it used to be $299 a year around 2 years before. With this subscription, you can download unlimited music. However, the caveat of this service is that Fyrfly do not contain all the popular music that you want. So, if you want another popular song that is not covered by these services, you may have to directly contact the copyright owner of that song.
