Tips to Select the Best Wedding Song for Your Video

The perfect song provides the exact emotion to the viewer, while giving them the inspiration to watch the film until the last moment. As videographers, we often struggle to find “The Best Song” as it is tedious and time consuming. Well, in that case, these tips will help you determine which song type to go for before stepping on to the searching part.

Choose the Right Music Platform

The music platform you choose should provide you a vast selection of quality music and should give you legal rights to use on wedding videos. Although some music providers offer free music with Creative Commons licenses, the quality of the music on these platforms is often not top-notch. Therefore, we always opt for a paid music provider. In most cases, our top choice would be MusicBed. If you know any other service apart from MusicBed, feel free to share in the comments. We would love to know it.

Understand the Couple’s Style

It is also crucial to know the music preferences of the couple you are filming. Most couples have a preferred genre or specifically songs because they have memories attached to specific songs. In our song selection process, we would always communicate with our couple and ask for their preferences. Some of the questions we would ask would be.

  • What is your preferred music genre?
  • Do you have any specific songs that would like to be included in the video?
  • Is it ok to include new songs to the video?
  • What moment would you like to emphasize in the video? Etc.

We may also provide a music genre list and ask them to tick the ones they like, so that we can have more than one option.

Align Music with Your Identity/Brand

Every videographer has their own identity, their own artistic style. Clients often choose videographers by checking out their samples, which highlight the identity of the videographer. Therefore, the music you choose should also align with your own artistic style. So, you should also trust your instincts when choosing the wedding songs.

Know the Story You Want to Tell

A wedding film is the cinematic portrayal of the unique love story of a couple’s special day. It involves a part that tells the story where the couple met, how they fell in love, how they proposed and how they arranged the wedding. Before stepping on to the story telling part, you must know their unique story. So, a mandatory part of our process is knowing the couple’s story and building a narrative for the film.

In this step, we would arrange our footages and dialogues first to understand the direction of the story. By arranging the video and building a narrative, our music selection process get’s easier because we know the exact emotion to add to specific parts of the film.

Tips to Find the Best Wedding Song from MusicBed

Now that you basically have a clear idea of the type of song you should select for your wedding video, let’s move on to the next step. In our opinion, this is where most videographers take unnecessary time in video editing. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

By following the tips given below, you can easily find the perfect song for your video editing because you already know your couple preferences, your preferences, the story of the wedding film and the music platform you intend to use. In our video editing process, we mostly use MusicBed, and thus we included steps we follow when choosing the right music from MusicBed.

Select the Right Genre for the Moment

If your couple have mentioned any genre, your first choice must be songs of that genre/s. If not, most suitable genres for wedding video are folk, indie, pop, ambient, and cinematic genres.

Select the Mood for the Moment

MusicBed also have the option to categorize music by the mood, which is a time saver for us. Since we already have developed our narrative, we already know the right mood for each section. So, explore this option when finding the right wedding song.

Look At the Lyrics

Reading lyrics is also an important part of the song selection process. Songs such as breakup songs, upbeat songs, sad songs, friendship songs and spiritual songs do not align well with wedding films. Visualize a couple kissing part of the video with a song with sad lyrics. Sounds gross right?

Same Key or Complimentary Key

Using The Camelot Wheel For Harmonic Compatibility

For most wedding videos, we end up selecting two songs or more. But there is always one perfect song that is focused on one element of the story. The complimentary songs should align well with this specific song; therefore, we use a well-known trick among professionals to find suitable secondary songs. That is, selecting a song with the same key or complimentary key of the selected song.

By using this trick, we can ensure smooth transition between tracks. This option is available on the “Additional settings” of MusicBed, which speed things up. We also suggest refining the search by genre or mood to match the desired energy of the film.

BPM

Beats per Minute or so-called BPM is another option we use to refine additional songs for the wedding video. Mostly, songs with same BPM range ensure smooth transition between songs. However, that shouldn’t stop you from experimenting because sometimes, songs with different BPM make the video unique and captivating. So, do not be afraid to add an unexpected twist to the video, if the moment demands it.

Create Playlists

We know that unique songs make the wedding video more perfect, but there are some songs that we really can’t ignore in our video editing process. That is why we should create a personal playlist so that we can use them in our future projects. If that seems difficult for you, we have a prearranged, custom-selected playlist available on this Page . Be sure to check it out with more tips for your video editing.
